Topics for Your Next Press Release: Community Involvement

Companies that are active in their local community by lending money, time and resources are often covered in their local papers, on radio and TV. Non-profits never have problems getting news coverage. Many companies like to align with one or two charities and rallying their folks around supporting those causes.
I worked for two companies in the past that really believed in giving back to the community by raising funds, making monetary donations and giving in-kind services (product and time) to organizations. Many times we were able to get local coverage by simply sharing what we were doing. If your company gives back to the community, here are some ways you can share your contributions via a media release:
Board nominations. Community-active business leaders are often asked to sit on local boards of schools, other businesses and non-profits. When new board members are nominated, it's not uncommon to send an announcement to the media.
Donating funds. If your company is making a significant donation to an organization, that's news worth sharing. Often times, the charity organization itself will make an announcement on the donator's behalf.
Raising funds. If you are charged with raising funds for a worthy cause, share why you've taken on the initiative and how you plan to raise the funds.
Sponsoring an event. Local events can't happen without clout and resources from area businesses. If your company is sponsoring a local event, the event organizers will be sure you get plenty of exposure. You can also reach out to the local media to share of your sponsorship of the event, taking the angle as to why it's important for everyone to support that endeavor.
Partnering with local schools to offer mentorship or internship programs. Being a coach or advisor to kids is important. You are effectively help them navigate the challenges of growing up and becoming responsible adults. If you company is looking to partner with a local school to offer mentorship or internship programs, announcing your plans to the media can help get the ball rolling.
Setting up a scholarship. Are you looking to establish a scholarship in the name of a former colleague, family or other reason? Offering to help fund someone's education is news.
Providing pro bono work. Donating your area of expertise is a great value for any non-profit. Non-profits operate on a shoestring budget with a minimal number of employees.
